Are You Putting Your Health First? May Reflection for Women’s Health Month

May is Women’s Health Month and also includes National Women’s Health Week—a time nestled between Cinco de Mayo, Mother’s Day, and Memorial Day. It’s a busy stretch, often filled with celebrations, family gatherings, and obligations. But amid the swirl of activity, there’s an invitation to pause and ask yourself: Am I putting my health first?

The 2025 theme for National Women’s Health Week encourages women to care for their whole health—mind and body. This year, the spotlight is on three vital areas of women’s health, with a focus on menopause and the importance of knowing your pelvic floor. Pelvic floor health is a key piece of overall wellness, yet it’s often overlooked or misunderstood.

Women’s health has long been at the heart of my work. For decades, I’ve supported clients in navigating emotional, physical, spiritual, and mental well-being. My own journey began with fertility challenges, which led me to write two books and eventually build a coaching practice. Now, as I celebrate my daughter’s college graduation, I’ve been reflecting on how easily our own wellness can slip when we’re constantly showing up for others.

Looking back, I realize I didn’t know what I know now. I researched menopause, tried to prepare—but in hindsight, I wish I had done even more.

Sometimes I think of the uterus, pelvic area, and root and sacral chakras as the body’s “junk drawer.” You know the one—where random odds and ends get tossed until it’s too full to close. Energetically and physically, this space can become a storage zone for unprocessed emotions, trauma, and tension. Without even realizing it, we may hold tightness in these areas from monthly stress, fertility struggles, or hormonal shifts through perimenopause and beyond.

In my books and blog posts, I’ve shared this simple but restorative mindfulness practice:
Place one hand on your heart, the other on your lower abdomen (your root chakra).
Breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth. Let your energy move freely through your body. Feel the connection between your emotional, physical, mental, and spiritual selves. Let them speak to each other.

If I could go back, I would offer my younger self one gentle reminder: tend to your power center with care and awareness. Because after the hormonal transitions of menopause, things really do shift—physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

So let’s not wait to do a deep clean of that “junk drawer.” Let’s bring mindful attention to the parts of ourselves that have been quietly holding so much.
