Cancer & Fertility (Infertility)
Supporting clients who began their family creation journey only to heartbreakingly discover breast cancer is a delicate and unique process requiring a team approach to healing.
I have had the privilege of working alongside a highly acclaimed fertility doctor, co-partnering in the family creation journeys of our mutual clients. Together, we navigate the fine line of supporting, loving, and guiding them through this challenging time. One client in particular, in collaboration with her oncologist and fertility team, developed a carefully layered game plan to pursue motherhood. With a cautious “watch and monitor” approach, her team focused on observing any changes in her body, managing her breast cancer, and moving forward with the hope of carrying a baby to term.
My role was to provide emotional support, and her courage was nothing short of extraordinary. She fought through countless internal battles, and ultimately, she won. “Warrior” doesn’t even begin to describe her strength.
The lesson she continually brought forward was her sovereignty. She set clear emotional boundaries, deciding who to involve in her journey and who to keep at a distance. She consciously released toxic elements from her past, determined to not let them corrupt her present.
She moved through waves of hope and hopelessness, fear and peace, and teetered between envisioning a disastrous future and one filled with grace. To be honest, after some of our sessions, I found myself in tears, deeply moved by the ugliness she faced and the incredible fortitude she maintained.
Her breast cancer was discovered through a self-exam. Please, please, please—touch your ta-tas! Do monthly self-breast exams, whether in the shower or out of it, but make sure you do them!
Cancer and infertility can be overcome, and life can be joyous. I know this for sure. Thinking of our breasts as part of our reproductive health requires a conscious shift, but it’s one worth making.
