Coping with Transition Fatigue

Could You Have Transition Fatigue?

Are you feeling emotionally, mentally, spiritually, and physically depleted?

As we transition into a new year, many of us carry a “holiday hangover”—a mix of tiredness and confusion. But beyond that, there seems to be a collective sense of overwhelm, stress, and disconnection. If this resonates with you, you might be experiencing Transition Fatigue.

What is Transition Fatigue?

Transition fatigue is the mental, emotional, and physical depletion caused by navigating ongoing change. It can leave you feeling drained, overwhelmed, ungrounded, or disconnected.

Here in New England, winter amplifies this fatigue. The cold snap keeps us hunkered down in a hibernation state, often creating a greater gap in our connection to nature and grounding.

Tips to Relieve Transition Fatigue

If you’re feeling the weight of transition fatigue, here are some simple yet powerful practices to help you find comfort and restore balance:

1. Connect with Nature

Even a brief moment outdoors can help shift your energy. The other day, it was 23 degrees and sunny, and while taking out the compost, I paused to place my hand on my favorite tree. In just 60 seconds, I felt a noticeable shift. Inspired, I stood barefoot in the sun, doing the five-point star yoga pose in my front yard. It did wonders for my spirit!

When was the last time you touched the Earth? Make it a daily practice, especially during difficult transitions.

2. Find the Positive in the Uncomfortable

Affirming the goodness in your situation, no matter how small, can help bring perspective and gratitude.

On New Year’s Eve, our well pipe developed a pinhole leak, flooding the cellar. We had to shut off the water and live without it for a few days. When the plumber arrived early on January 2nd, I felt immense gratitude for the repair and the return of running water. This experience also brought an important awareness: how much water I use unconsciously.

As a result, I’ve scheduled an upgrade to low-flush toilets and begun practicing greater mindfulness around water use.

3. Embrace Quiet and Rest

Transition fatigue often manifests as disrupted sleep patterns, changes in eating habits, or a feeling of being stuck in quicksand. My mom used to say, “Fatigue makes cowards of us all.”

Give yourself permission to rest. Whether that means extra sleep or simply finding a few minutes of solitude throughout your day, it can act as a grounding rod for your mind and body.

To connect inward, try a simple breathing exercise:

  • Inhale through your nose,
  • Hold for a moment,
  • Exhale through your mouth.
    Repeat this for three cycles.

This small practice can create a calming reset.

4. Shift Your Perspective

Sometimes, the smallest connection or shift in your thoughts, emotions, or behaviors can unlock new possibilities—like turning the right combination to open a lock.

What ways do you access your intuitive senses?

Final Thoughts

Transition fatigue is real, but it doesn’t have to define your days. By grounding yourself, finding gratitude, and nurturing your spirit, you can navigate life’s inevitable transitions with more grace and ease.
