Feeling the Feeling Wheel: When Emotions Spin Out of Control

Some days, the feeling wheel spins so fast it’s almost unreadable. Emotions tilt us on every axis—full-on, off-balance, and dizzying. You might be feeling it too.

Looking at the Feeling Wheel Chart, we hope to make sense of our emotions, maybe even find a path to healing or fix the hurt. But sometimes, the wheel blurs into a swirl of colors and words, and instead of one clear feeling, we feel all at once. It’s overwhelming. It’s exhausting. It’s painful.

It can feel like being on the emotional weight bench of a relentless workout, noticing every ache—not just your own hurt, but the collective pain swirling around you.

We try to gain clarity. We try to name the feeling. And yet, the wheel keeps spinning, recycling the same emotions over and over, a blur of joy, fear, anger, sadness, and everything in between.

In moments like this, maybe it’s not about fixing or labeling the feelings. Maybe it’s about feeling them fully (I see your eye roll) —even when the wheel is spinning out of control—and letting ourselves rest in the awareness that this spinning is human, and shared.

What to Do When the Feeling Wheel Spins Out of Control

When the sensations feel unbalancing, centering is essential. Here’s a practice you can try:

  1. Get Present in Your Heart: Place one hand on your heart and one on your third eye (the space between your eyebrows).
  2. Breathe Mindfully: Inhale through your nose, exhale through your heart. Let the rhythm anchor you.
  3. Visualize Grounding: Imagine a blue light in the shape of a tube extending from your heart down into the core of the Earth. Feel yourself firmly grounded.
  4. Return to the Wheel: Once centered, if you feel called, glance at the Feeling Wheel. See if you can identify the core feeling at the heart of the swirl.

This practice doesn’t “fix” the emotions, but it gives you a stable, calm point from which to experience them—allowing insight and healing to naturally emerge.

Fix the Hurt

Sometimes, we turn to the Feeling Wheel hoping to fix the hurt—our own and the collective. But emotions aren’t always meant to be fixed. They are meant to be felt.

When the wheel spins out of control, the practice isn’t about labeling every feeling or finding the “right” answer. It’s about coming back to your center. By grounding in your heart, breathing, and envisioning that tube of blue light connecting you to the Earth, you create a safe space to experience the emotions fully.

From this place of centered awareness, you may notice a core feeling emerge—a hint of sadness, anger, joy, or fear that you can acknowledge without judgment. Simply noticing it, giving it space, and allowing it to move through you is often more healing than trying to fix it immediately.

Fixing the hurt isn’t about control. It’s about presence, acceptance, and compassion—for yourself, for others, and for the swirling emotional landscape we all share.

When the Feeling Wheel spins again, remember: you have a calm, grounded center to return to. You don’t have to ride the blur of every emotion at full speed. You can feel, breathe, and simply be.
