October’s Transition: Lessons from Nature
As October unfolds, we witness nature’s transition from the vibrant colors of summer to the serene stillness of fall and winter. I find solace in spending time in my backyard, immersed in the calming sounds of nature.
One particular crow has become a curious companion. This crow seems to announce whenever something is amiss. Recently, its loud cawing caught my attention, and I couldn’t help but feel it was a bit intrusive. I found myself asking the crow, “What’s the matter?”
It turns out, the crow was alerting me to a little red fox lounging in the sun about 100 feet away from where I was working. The fox was simply enjoying the warmth, but the crow was clearly on high alert. Shortly afterward, the crow’s persistent cawing signaled the presence of a red-tailed hawk just out of my line of sight. The crow’s calls were its way of letting me know something noteworthy was happening.
This experience makes me wonder about the unseen, unheard, and perhaps neglected parts of ourselves. How often do we ignore these inner signals, much like the crow’s warnings, that calls us to explore and understand what’s really going on within us?
Finding those small moments of sparkle and warmth in our daily lives can ignite a sense of hope and joy. These moments of clarity and peace contribute to what I call EveryDay Certainty—a practice of recognizing and nurturing our inner joy, peace, and groundedness.
