Finding Your Way Through It

The last few weeks have been pretty bumpy and rough. I find myself shaking my head for no apparent reason, but there is a reason.

I’ve seen rough before and lived through it, as we all have. But this rough feels different—a collective rough. It’s like when you’re on a plane and they announce, “Flight Attendants: Cross-check and prepare for landing.” You know it’s coming, and you can sense and feel it. Maybe you tell yourself, “This is so uncomfortable,” while you grip the armrest a bit tighter and brace for the landing.

That pressure point of landing is tough and rough on the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual levels. The only way through it is by self-soothing and turning inward. I close my eyes, take a long, slow, deep breath, and tell myself, “Almost down.” I hold my breath until the front wheel bumps down and brace for the whoosh of the brakes.

I think collectively, we are waiting for the whoosh to stop. To help navigate this, here are three self-soothing techniques you can try:

Mindfulness and Grounding Techniques: Practice deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, or grounding exercises. Focus on the present moment and use your senses—what can you see, hear, touch, smell, and taste?

Routine and Structure. Establish a daily routine to provide stability and normalcy. Regular times for meals, exercise, and relaxation can create a comforting framework amidst the uncertainty.

Creative Outlets and Self-Expression. Engage in activities like; journaling, painting, or music to process and manage your emotions. Find an outlet that feels natural and use it to express yourself.
