October is here, and so are the creepy, ghoulish, dark Halloween decorations on full display. Did you know that in 2023, Americans spent a record $12.2 billion on Halloween? The average person shelled out $108.24, up from 2021’s $102.74. (A ton of money!) Here’s how the spending broke down:
Costumes $4.1 billion
Candy $3.6 billion
Decorations $3.9 billion
Greeting cards: $0.5 billion
However, last year, spending is expected to dip slightly. The National Retail Federation (NRF) predicts Americans will spend $11.6 billion, with an average of $103.63 per person. Could it be because we’ve accumulated enough Halloween decor over the years? I know I reuse mine every year—just like my Christmas decorations! But the real reasons include consumers pulling back on spending and seeking more cost-saving measures.
I find myself wondering … why our culture has embraced this ghoulish holiday so strongly. Maybe it’s the thrill of pretending to be someone else for an evening?
As I reflect on my clients’ experiences, I’ve noticed that Halloween has been elevated to “holiday” status, complete with both the joy and shadow sides of our other yearly special occasions. For women and families facing expected or unexpected life challenges, October 31st might stir up a mix of pleasant and unpleasant emotions. It can be terrifying to confront the shadow side of ourselves—those dark corners we may not love as much. But this season offers an opportunity to show ourselves more love and embrace the bold truth that the universe favors the brave.
Years ago, when I was hosting Tell-All-Tuesday—a sort of precursor to podcasting (I’m dating myself here!)—I asked the question:
“What was the moment you knew?”
That instant when you realized you were in the middle of a deep challenge. Where were you? Were you alone? At work? On the phone? What did you do? That moment of recognition creates a demarcation line in your life. It’s when innocence fades, and the dream you once had shifts forever—yet it triggers future planning! Looking ahead is a powerful way to prevent us from spiraling into negative thinking in the present.
As Halloween approaches, I invite you to share your own “moment I knew” in the comments using #TheMomentIKnew. Let’s come together and release the ghosts of the unloved and unhonored parts of ourselves this season.
