Invisible Allergies & Unseen Energies: When Rescuing Comes at a Cost

What happens when you ignore your own limits in order to keep the peace? I found out over the holidays—through a house full of love, loss, and dogs.

Larry*, a beautiful blind husky mix, belongs to a family member. Over the holiday, I opened my home to Larry and another dog, Michael*. I created a dog-friendly zone in my cellar living room, complete with a twin bed for my family member who was visiting.

Here’s the thing: I’m extremely allergic to dogs, cats, and a long list of other things I won’t bore you with. The reactions aren’t visible—but they’re very real. My throat tightens. I wheeze. Sometimes I even sound like a clucking chicken. It’s scary and exhausting.

So why, you might ask, would I open my home to two dogs?
Why would I try to keep boundaries in place when I knew it was going to be a stretch?

The answer is layered—with love, grief, and a deep desire to help during a traumatic season of family change.

“No Good Deed Goes Unpunished…”

That old saying my mom used to use came roaring back over the holiday.

With so many moving parts—people coming and going, sleepless nights, and emotional upheaval—it didn’t take long for tensions to rise.

At one point I heard, “You don’t like my dog.”
Judgments were flying. Assumptions, too.

It made me realize something important: when you try to adjust and stretch to meet others’ needs, it still might not land the way you hope. And often, it comes at a cost to your own well-being.

A few days later, I visited another cousin who’s always thoughtful about my allergies. Even then, someone made a similar comment: “You don’t like my dog.”
All I had done was gently say, “No, no puppy, go sit next to your mom.”

This person has a peanut allergy—and I would never mock them by waving peanut butter around and saying, “YOU HATE MY PEANUTS!”

Allergies and Energies: What We Can’t See Still Hurts

So why am I sharing all this?

Because allergies, like emotions, are often invisible—and deeply misunderstood.
And just like emotional wounds, they don’t need to be seen to cause harm.

According to a quick Google search:

Allergic reactions are triggered by the immune system’s overreaction to harmless substances called allergens.

That definition stopped me in my tracks. Because beyond the physical symptoms, isn’t that exactly what happens when we’re constantly exposed to emotional triggers and invisible stressors?

Whether it’s a dander particle or someone else’s pain you’ve absorbed for too long—your body knows. It goes into overdrive. And if the people around you don’t share that same awareness, the harm can be hard to explain.

The Rescuer Reflex

Here’s the truth: I spent the entire visit uncomfortably medicated just to avoid my allergic reactions. But deep down, I wasn’t doing it just for me.

I was trying to keep the peace. To avoid hurting someone else’s feelings.
I was rescuing.

And I’ve been working on that.

How to Address Rescuer Syndrome

The urge to help, fix, and accommodate—especially when it hurts us—is something many of us carry, especially those of us who’ve been the emotional glue in our families. Here’s what I’m practicing:

  • Self-awareness: Notice when you’re stepping in to soothe or fix, even when it hurts you.
  • Setting boundaries: Saying “no” without guilt is one of the most loving things you can do—for both of you.
  • Seeking support: Coaching can help uncover the roots of these patterns and teach new ones.
  • Practicing self-compassion: You are worthy without overextending yourself.
  • Understanding empathy vs. enabling: True empathy honors everyone’s needs—yours included.

What I Know Now (Remember Now)

There’s a dog-friendly hotel in town, and I now have the information ready to share.

More importantly, I’ve learned or remembered that the peace of my space—my body, my home, my emotional well-being—is sacred.

Now, when my inner “rescuer” is triggered, I will take a breath.
And I ask myself:

Is this truly mine to carry?
Am I crossing my own boundaries to keep someone else comfortable?

Because my peace matters too.
And yours does, always.
