Narcissistic Abuse on Repeat: The Pattern Never Changes
When the role changes but the wound stays the same…
Recently, I watched a video about a falling out between a very famous person and someone who worked closely with them. The power dynamics were painfully visible—already lopsided from the start—and what unfolded was a front-row seat to the cycle of narcissistic abuse in action.
What struck me most wasn’t just the chaos, but the predictability of it. The same patterns I’ve seen in private lives, in coaching work, and in my own experience played out in real time on a global stage.
It showed how an unhealed person—no matter how successful or admired—can keep creating irreversible harm through a broken internal system. When the pain inside remains unaddressed, the damage spreads outward. And the cycle begins again.
If you don’t (won’t) heal the system that hurt you, you’re going to rebuild it—with you as the architect.
That’s what happens with narcissistic abuse—from the narcissist’s side. Instead of growing, instead of addressing their core wounds, they reassemble the same house of pain. New partner, new career, new setting—but the same blueprint.
The narcissist doesn’t change. They just rebrand.
They bring the hose to the fire they started—and still act like the hero.
But underneath the performance is a refusal to rebuild the self. Emotional patterns are simply recycled into new identities. Because they’ve never taken accountability or done the deep healing work, the same traits surface again and again:
- Hypersensitivity
- Overcorrection
- Defensiveness
- Moral superiority
They wear different titles, hold new positions, enter new relationships—but the inner script doesn’t change. It’s not evolution. It’s shape-shifting.
The Cycle of Control
Here’s how the narcissistic cycle tends to unfold:
Step One: Discredit the Messenger
The moment someone speaks the truth, the narcissist moves to destroy their credibility. If they smear the source, no one listens to the story. The goal is to protect their version of reality at all costs.
Step Two: Control the Process
They don’t just react—they hijack the system. Whether it’s legal proceedings, therapy, or family dynamics, they insert themselves early and collapse the process from the inside. It’s all about domination.
Step Three: Plausible Deniability
They rarely act alone. Narcissists pull strings behind the curtain—keeping their hands clean while others carry out the dirty work. This “gray zone” manipulation makes everything feel just off enough to make you question yourself.
Step Four: Collapse of Perception
The target becomes isolated and confused. Onlookers are manipulated. The narcissist deflects, spins, and distorts reality until no one—including the victim—is sure what’s real anymore. This isn’t just gaslighting; it’s a psychological takedown.
Step Five: Weaponize Everything
The next attack comes through the courts, social media, mutual friends—anywhere but directly. They stir emotional warfare. Their goal: get you to react. Because if they can trigger your anger, they can paint you as the problem.
“Get someone mad, and you can discredit them. Dismiss them. Destroy them.”
What They Can’t Control
But here’s what they can’t control:
You.
Your calm. Your clarity. Your inner world.
Even when your soul wants to scream, staying grounded is your protection. The narcissist can’t work their magic if you don’t play their script. They can’t prove instability if you stay centered. And while gaslighting may shake your reality, your clarity is what keeps you whole.
Don’t give them the one slip-up they need to trigger the tumbleweed of lies.
The narcissist doesn’t rebuild—they replicate.
Until they face their own patterns, they’ll keep living the same emotional life, just on a new set, with new props.
If this pattern feels familiar, you’re not alone.
The confusion. The collapse of clarity. The chaos.
It’s not your fault.
Healing begins with seeing clearly.
And you’re already doing that.
