October, as Domestic Violence Awareness Month, shines a light on the disturbing reality of violence against women and children. It’s a month that stirs deep frustration and anger within me—frustration over the ongoing attacks on those who are most vulnerable.
I am deeply committed to helping women heal from trauma—trauma often so deeply ingrained that the process of releasing it can feel excruciating. Their fundamental right to be heard, seen, and safe should be guaranteed by law, by universal principles, and by our Constitution. Yet many still find themselves fighting to reclaim their dignity and safety, embodying the spirit of “nevertheless, she persisted.”
But here’s a question I keep asking: Why is it called Domestic Violence Awareness Month? The word “domestic” implies that abuse is confined to the home. But violence is violence, no matter where it happens or who commits it. It can come from someone you know, someone you trust, even someone you’ve pledged to love. This is not simply a domestic issue—it’s a pervasive societal problem.
I understand this far too well. I know the pain of being harmed by someone who claimed to love me, and I also know the further violation of being let down by the justice system and family courts.
If you don’t feel safe, if you feel trapped, please know this: you do have choices. Finding and planning your way out is crucial—and you don’t have to do it alone. If you’ve already left and are now navigating those dangerous, high-risk moments that often come after leaving, you are not alone either. There are others who understand and are here to help.
Please reach out. I am here to support you. You don’t have to face this by yourself.
