To Those Who Struggle with Mother’s Day—You’re Not Alone

Does Anyone Else Really Struggle with Mother’s Day?

Over the course of my life, the meaning of Mother’s Day has shifted and evolved.

In my 20s, I hosted brunch for my mom and her extended family—because I didn’t have a significant other or children. (Ouch.)
In my 30s, I couldn’t get far enough away from the day. It landed in the middle of my infertility diagnosis and felt unbearable.
The next decade brought the loss of my mother, and my grief was so deep and all-consuming that Mother’s Day became a distant blur.

Then came my divorce—and that opened a whole other can of emotional worms. Mother’s Day became just another day to get through.

And now, in my 60s,  it’s simply a day.

A day to reflect.
A day to sit with the history of my life.
Some moments still trigger me. Others are part of an ongoing process of recovering and releasing.

So what can you do if you’re really struggling with Mother’s Day?

1. Make a Plan.

Decide what feels right for you. And then—do that.
Give yourself full permission, no guilt, no second-guessing.

2. Take a Break.

Step away from the noise—social media, advertisements, other people’s expectations. (So Loud)
Try my favorite mindset reset: the “10 Years From Now” lens.
Ten years from now, no one will remember if you opted out of Mother’s Day.
(Been there, done that. It’s in the rearview mirror, and guess what? No one even noticed.)

3. Find One Moment of Joy.

Just one. For you.
Ask yourself: What would bring me joy today?
What does that look like?
What does it feel like?
What does it sound like?

Even a tiny spark of joy can be a gentle light in the middle of a hard day.

4. In Grief?  Honor It.

If you’re sitting in grief, let it be okay. Truly okay.
Ask yourself: What is one small, physical act I can do to honor this grief?

Maybe it’s lighting a candle.
Journaling your feelings.
Taking a quiet walk.
Or simply placing a hand over your heart and breathing deeply—filling yourself with love, compassion, and presence. Expanding your love for yourself.

Whether you’re grieving a person, a dream, or a version of life that didn’t unfold—your experience matters.

This day can be complicated.
You don’t have to explain where you are in the journey.
You don’t have to feel joyful just because a holiday says you should.

Just know—you’re not alone.
