I was driving home after paying a very large tax bill—literally backing up my car full of money into town hall—and my mind wandered. I started thinking about the growing sense of disparity in our country… and the world.
To be honest, I’ve been quietly letting go of my long-held belief that goodness always prevails. The reflection in the mirror lately has me questioning not only the goodness in the world, but the goodness within myself—and whether that value still has an anchor in us all?
Somewhere along the road, I drifted into what felt like a daydream. I imagined a world more connected and caring. A life led by fairness, not scarcity or greed. The sun was shining, the breeze carried the scent of the ocean, and the greenness of the trees shimmered in a way that almost didn’t feel real. Everything felt momentarily soft, sacred… possible.
Then, in a flash, it was gone.
A white car pulled out directly in front of me. I slammed the brakes, heart pounding, thinking I might T-bone her. Her glare, sharp and unapologetic, jolted me fully back into the now.
Was it just a daydream? Or was it a glimpse—something meant to keep me hopeful?
I’ve lost hope more than once in my life. And somehow, it always manages to crawl its way back into my soul—sometimes with a vengeance. But this feeling… this glimpse… feels different. As if something collective is being released. As if we’re all on the edge of remembering.
It’s hard not to notice: trusted people betraying others, public officials doing the same, each act rooted in the hunger to gain at someone else’s expense.
But what if these glimpses—these fleeting moments of light—are not illusions, but invitations?
What if they’re showing us how to transcend the hopelessness and confusion?
It reminds me of the movie The Family Man, with Nicolas Cage. His greed melts away as he becomes present in the life offered to him—a life filled with meaning, not money. And when that glimpse is taken away, we see it: his soul, his true self.
Maybe… just maybe… that’s what’s happening now.
