When the time change happened and the sun began setting around 4 p.m., many of us felt that familiar energetic shift. The shorter days can feel disorienting. Wanting to stay home more is natural—our bodies slow down in winter—but sometimes that instinct quietly turns into isolation. And when isolation starts changing how we feel about ourselves, even the simple act of going out after dark can feel like a hurdle.
Loneliness isn’t a personal failure. It’s a human experience. The U.S. Surgeon General has even called it a public health epidemic because of its impact on our emotional and physical well-being. Here on Cape Cod, where our seasonal rhythms are extreme, the quiet of winter can amplify those feelings. When the visitors leave and the pace slows, many women—washashores, newcomers, longtime locals—find themselves longing for meaningful connection.
After a heartfelt conversation with Sandra Murray, the reference librarian at the Sandwich Public Library, a gentle idea emerged: create a space where women could feel seen, supported, and less alone this winter. These gatherings invite women to share stories, breathe a little easier, and grow in community—reminding us that connection is a form of healing.
The Women’s Winter Circle—Wednesday Workshops runs from December through March and is simply an open door during a tender season. Sometimes knowing a light is on for you somewhere is enough to shift an entire day. Having something to look forward to with people who truly understand can gently turn loneliness into warmth.
If the heaviness of winter loneliness is weighing on you, know this: you are not alone. You don’t have to walk through the season by yourself. You’re welcome to join the circle, or simply reach out to me for a chat—I’m here to listen, support, and share a little light together.
